Gin Strategy
Relating to the tips we showed you in the
Oklahoma Gin Tips page, here are some game strategies in which you can use when you are playing the
Oklahoma Gin version and running into certain moves.
The Deck Of Cards
Due to the fact the Oklahoma Gin version is played with a single
deck of cards, if you are counting on a certain card which the other player already
discarded and you don't have any chance of getting it again, you better create yourself other options since the same card is lost and you won't get it during the game.
This situation makes the game dynamic and causes strategy changes in high frequencies, this is why it's very important to be an experienced player and know all the tricks and strategies.
Drawing a Card
This is one of the most important strategies in the Oklahoma Gin version.
You must pay attention to which cards your competitors are drawing from the
discard pile, this is how you can more or less keep track of the strategies the other players are using.
You must avoid drawing cards from the discard pile and drawing cards from the deck, this is how you stay as mysterious as possible in your game and your competitors won't be able to reveal your strategies.
When your competitors feel they can't reveal your hand they will feel threatened and play under pressure, be quick to meld and finish as fast as they can, which can do you good.
Discarding a Card
When you finish your turn and discard as card, you would want to discard a card you have no use in, this will be the first priority, but it's also important to discard cards which won't match your competitor's cards, this is why you have to pay attention and keep track of the cards your competitors discard and this way know more or less which cards to discard.
In the Oklahoma version, players has the tendency to get rid of high value cards usually at the beginning of the game because high value cards are considered many negative points, this is how you can take advantage of it and try and create series with high card value, as you will have a large variety since your competitors will get rid of their high cards. You must of course, pay attention to the fact you can count on these cards up to a certain stage of the game and not be tempted into waiting for the high cards until the late stages of the game because you might be caught with your pants down.
Melding
In the Oklahoma version, melding is actually the finishing move of the game, this is why it's very important to try and arrange series by the time you get to half the deck pile cards level and even count on high valued cards which the competitors are getting rid of. When you get to half of the deck cards you have to get rid of the high cards and stay with as low cards as you can in order to try and reach as lower
Deadwood as possible.
Recommendation: If you feel that one of the other players is about to end the game with a knock or a gin and you have no chance of winning, try to draw a low value card from the discard pile and trade it with a high value card which is in your hand so you will be left with a lower amount of points than the higher card.
The Knock move
In the
elimination tourneys, it's better to perform the
knock as quickly as possible and by that avoid your competitors any chance of reaching a lower Deadwood than yours, it's better than waiting for the Gin move.
In a multi table tournament, you wouldn't want to take any chance and wait for a Gin, and so it's better to perform the knock as quickly as possible and try to win points as your opponents still didn't build their hand and most likely they are holding high value cards as well.
