Gin Rummy
Tips
When playing
gin rummy
you must observe what cards your opponent is
discarding and more importantly to remember which of your discarded cards he is
drawing to his pack.
All discarded cards of all players, must be memorized
by you for your own good. Remember that the other players memorize them too.
The only cards you can not see are the cards
in your opponents' hands, but the main assumption is that they
are all trying to
meld the cards.
Usually, gin rummy games end when the main
deck is half way over, or 2/3 at least. Its important to
knockers to remember that, cause they should not hesitate to knock earlier than this status of the
deck.
When you are drawing
a card from the deck you are maximize your chances for two reasons:
1. One reason is that your opponents do not know which cards you have since you didn’t took the card
which your opponent discarded.
2. The second reason is that each card you are
drawing from the discard pile is a card that your opponent doesn't need. A deck card might be a card that one of your opponents might need.
It's true that you can't always take just deck cards during the
entire game, but try to remember the advantages without taking cards
from the
discard pile. This is even more important to do when it enables you to knock immediately for your best.
A deck card, which you
don't know its fixture before you take it, can sometimes fit
to few of your cards. You can have a good card which completes a
set or a
run
in your hands altogether.
In case you have
a reason to believe that the opponent playing after you might knock at his turn,
drawing a low discarded card and discarding high value
deadwood card can be
a smart thing to do.
It's important
to think about the deadwood all time, especially when the game is about to end. If you are not going to
win this round, make sure that you are not the number one looser as well.
Try to play and
to meld low value cards from the beginning of the round, This way you will not have any problem to keep low value cards instead of high value ones during the game.
When you see some of the opponents drawing
high value from the discard pile, you have a good chance to knock them down.
In order to prevent your rummy opponent from laying a deadwood against you, try to attach a card to a four cards set, rather than
a
sequence cards.
At the beginning of the game and all the way
through the mid deck of cards, you can wait for a middle card to come from the deck. Middle card
can be a ten card for example, in case you have nine and
a jack, suited. When you are already half deck over,
waiting for this mid card can be less and less smart to
do, try to get rid of the high cards you still have and to meld some sets.
Another good defensive tip, especially
for beginner players in the rummy games, is to establish certain cards for the other players, to
discard, and to hold at your hands, good combinations that can utilize or can bring higher rummy benefit, the cards
which the other players have been “encouraged” to discard.
Let's say that you have the information to believe that one of the other players, have 2, 3 and 4 – all with different suits. Think about the option
which you can actually gives him another 2 card, just for the option for him to get rid of the 4 card, in case he would like to
create a set. Since you already understand the importance of low unmatched cards, for
a case of Knocking, you can actually feed your opponents with good cards, waiting for them to discard and give you even better cards.
