Gin Rummy Strategy

In contrary to regular Rummy games, the gin rummy game is a bit more complicated for the average player. You must remember rules of rummy, and in addition pay more attention to the Gin Rummy rules.

When playing Gin Rummy,  try to gain as much information you need about your opponents cards. If one of your opponents is taking a specific card from the discards pile, you must memorize it.

If one of your opponents is not taking a specific card you must remember it as well. This kind of information can and will be very useful in terms of knocking, because you will have the ability of knowing in advance which cards and what sets and runs, your opponents have.

A good strategy for a rummy player is to play for Knocking. Needless to say that the bonuses you get, in case you will go for a gin is better, but it is much difficult going for a gin, especially on your first moves.

Try to develop yourself some triangle cards, try to have low value cards for the unmatched pack. When choosing to knock, you must remember which cards your opponents have, since this information is critical for your bonuses.

Each set of cards you have, make it middle. The main reason is that if your set ends with an Ace card, you will not be able to add cards on the two ends of it.

King and an Ace, can wait for a Queen card only, In contrary to a Six and Seven, which can meld into a set with either Five or Eight.

If you are in for the big money, keep the 7's close to you, these cards have the highest probability to end as a set.

In Oklahoma Gin, and in other Gin versions, playing for a knock can catch the other players not ready. You can always assume that other players do have a better hand than you do, and that they are going for a Gin, this way you have a good potential to knock and make them loose important points.

If you are able to knock, do it. The more you wait for your knocking, the higher potential for your opponents to beat you. In some cases in a rummy room, players keeps their knocking for the next turn, waiting for better unmatched cards. Rummy players must remember that going for the silver can be better than loosing the gold.

The decision when to knock, or how long to wait until knocking, depends on how many cards are still in the pile, and how high is your chances either to go for a gin or to loose this round.

In case you start a round with three unmatched cards or more, valued – 10 points, start discarding them as early as possible. Don’t put too much emphasize about the chances to have a good combination. After seven or more draws, it's useless to keep a high-cards triangle, simply because you are going to loose the round.

When taking cards from the discards pile, remember that the other players saw which cards you have. In order to win the rummy round, play the reverse psychology game on them. You have the advantage of taking cards even if you don't really need them, just for the chance of failing your opponents. Each card you will take from the deck pile, can be as good for you, as it can be bad, however in both cases, nobody knows which cards you now have.
