Rummy School - Lesson 14: Important Tips for the Traditional Rummy Players

The following tips will help you, the beginning players, to perform basic and important moves without making mistakes which will cause you unnecessary losses. It's very important to remember and memorize these tips in order to learn and become better and more experienced rummy players who are able to compete in the higher levels and in the more advanced rummy versions.

The traditional rummy game is played with 2 decks of 52 cards each with no Jokers so each card appears twice and if there's a card that you need and you are not able to draw it you will have a chance to get it in another time during the game.

Drawing a card in the traditional rummy game can be a very important strategy during the game. If you focus in drawing cards only from the deck pile and not from the discard pile you can remain more mysterious to the other players and they will never know which cards you are counting on more or less.

As time goes by and as the game progresses and you still draw cards from the deck pile and not the discard pile, your opponents will notice the problem and find it difficult to figure out your game, this is why it's better to draw as many cards as possible from the deck pile.

If and when the cards which appear on the top of the discard pile are the same cards which your opponents don't need, and when you are still drawing cards from the deck pile, it can prevent your opponents to meld and reveal their hands.

When you discard a card, it's important you discard a card which you don't need and doesn't match any of the cards in your hand in order to build series. Moreover if you pay attention to the cards your opponents discard and try to discard the same cards you can prevent them from using the cards you discarded.

During the game before melding it's important to know which cards are better to discard and which are better to keep. For example: if you have the following cards in your hand: 6 hearts, 7 hearts, 7 spades, and 4 diamonds, it's better you get rid from the 4 diamonds cards which doesn't let you build any series and stay with the other cards which enable you more options to build series.

In the traditional rummy game you don't have to wait for a minimal amount of series arranged cards in order to meld, you can meld any series you just built to the table and add cards to series other players melded. This is why if all your opponents have melded with a few series there's no need to wait for a Hunt move (melding all the cards in one shot and ending the game) because it's too risky, it's important to meld as fast as you can the cards which are already arranged in series and add other non matching cards to other players' series.

If you already decided to perform a hunt, it's important to do it with surprise when your opponents don't expect it, whether in the first stages of the game when your hand is already well arranged, or when no one of your opponents hasn't even meld, this is how you catch all your opponents with many negative points.
