The History Of Rummy
The game of Rummy is a family of games which are "draw and discard" games.
Except from the unique game platform, the main goal of this game is to get rid of all the cards you have in your hands with series of sets or runs cards and meld the cards on the table.
All of the Rummy games include a certain type of score system which makes this game even more attractive.
There are many theories about the origin of the Rummy game, each theory claim for a character which attributes the invention to different people and countries around the world.
Eastern Countries
One of the most ancient card games in
the world which is similar to the Rummy game method
is the Chinese card games from the 18th century the
Mahjong. Following the Mahjong, many western
variations of this game were invented all around the
world. Which carry the names of Conquian , Keno and
more.
It is common that the Rummy and similar
games were played by the Chinese immigrants and British
tradesman and Portuguese who played the game while
staying in China.
Mexico
One of the Rummy game variations originated in the Spanish game "Conquian" which was brought to America by the Spanish communities who immigrated west.
Many saw the "Conquian" (Konquian) game as the ancient father of the Rummy game and its kind, and found similarity to the modern Rummy game which we now know as the Rummy Gin game.
Rummy is a family of games which have a similar structure.
All games combine the same play method which contains 2 actions of card drawing and card discarding during each round.
These actions are done in order to help the players to arrange the cards they have in their hands to series of "sets" or "runs".
A set is 3 or 4 cards from the same class ordered in the array of different forms (for example: a spades shaped Quin, a heard shaped quin and a clover shaped quin).
A Run is 3 or more follow up cards with the same shape (For example: 3,4,5,6 clover shaped)
The most popular version of the Rummy games is the Rummy Gin game. Most assumptions claim that the game was invented in New York in the first decades of the 20th Century.
Some say that the name "Gin" comes from the alcoholic beverage sharing the same name.
The game became so popular when it was adapted by movie stars and Hollywood celebrities back then at the early 1930s that enjoyed playing fast and thrilling games on the set where they were shooting their films.
Another reason for the popularity of the game is as a result of the great depression period when people didn't have enough economical resources to entertain themselves outside their homes, and they found themselves passing quality time with their family and friends playing Rummy in house.
Lately, the Rummy game is starting to appear online on the internet and players all around the world are offered to join and become a part of the growing community of the Rummy game. This community includes older players who grew playing Rummy and now joining the younger players and the next generations in this popular game which apparently will last for more generations.
The rummy games continue to take a dominant part and they always be special, fun and exciting and be accessible to each and every one of us.
