Welcome to the second part of this rummy glossary series. I won’t delay with an introduction today so if you’re ready let’s begin.

Dead Cards: These are the cards that are no longer available to play as they are either discarded or melded into a player’s hand.

Deuce: A two of any suit or colour

Discard: After a player draws a card from the stock pile and then places it on the discard pile.

Fill: This is the card that helps to turn a combination into a matched set.

Go Out: This term refers to getting rid of the last card in your hand.

House Rules: House rules are usually different from the official game rules and house rules are always agreed upon before the games starts. They can include optional rules.

Matched Set: A matched set is three or more cards that can be melded together.

Meld: This is three or more cards of the same value or rank such as the 7 of hearts, 7 of clubs, 7 of diamonds, or three or more of the same suit in a sequence or consecutive order such as the 4 of clubs, 5 of clubs, 6 of clubs, or the 8 of hearts, 9 of hearts, ten of hearts, and Jack of hearts.

Round The Corner: This is a rule that allows the Ace to be in sequence with both the king and the deuce. This rule is often only deemed valid when aces are high.

Speculate: This is to pick up your opponents discard so that it will produce a combination instead of a meld.

Undercut: This is where you reduce your deadwood to equal or less than your opponents after they have knocked.

Wild Discard: A wild discard is a completely unsafe discard but this sometimes become necessary in order to win the game.

Well that’s it for the rummy glossary. Hopefully you were already familiar with most of these terms but if not then hopefully you have learned something new also.

I have been posting about online rummy for quite some time now and so I thought I would do a two part series on all the rummy terminology that you should be familiar with. There is a large list of terms and that is why I am breaking this series into two parts. The glossary is in alphabetical format so here goes.
Aces High: This is only applicable in games where Aces are counted using higher points values for example Q-K-A is valid but A-2-3 is not. Some of the rummy games allow aces to be treated as both high and low.

Aces Low: This term refers to aces that are counted as a 1 point value. There are some rummy games that allow aces to have both high and low values so it is wise to check what rules apply to the game you are playing.

Baiting: This term can also be known as advertising, baiting, chumming, fishing, or tempting. It is when one player discards a card with the intention of convincing the other player to discard a card of the same rank or suit. This is a strategic rummy move.

Blind Discard: A blind discard is a term that is used when a player discards a card without having any idea whether or not their opponent can make use of it. This is a very common move at the start of a rummy game.

Block: This term refers to holding back a card so that it won’t allow your component to complete their meld.

Captain: This is where one player plays against two opponents or where two players play against three or even four players.

Combination: This term refers to two cards that can become a matched set if another suitable card is added to them.

Count: This is the total number of points that are in a hand after deducting the count of the total melded cards.

Cut: This refers to cutting the cards after they have been shuffled. This is to ensure fair play and the deck is cut in two with the lower portion being placed on the top to ensure that the order of the deck is changed.

That’s it for part one of this Rummy glossary series. There are some great terms listed here and ones that you should definitely be familiar with if you want to become an expert at your game.
