Kalooki is very much like Classic Rummy, with a few changes to the rules of the game. The goal of every player is to be the first to put all cards into play by creating melds including traditional runs and sets. Players with remaining cards tally up the points of the cards and track them. Anyone who gets more than 150 points in a single round or in a series of hands is eliminated from play. Like traditional Rummy, a player can create groups of cards from cards in his or her hand and from drawn cards; the sets of cards are called melds. A set or run must have at least three cards in the group. A player can have a run of suited cards with consecutive values like 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 of hearts, or they can have a set of cards of differing suits and equal value like a 10 of diamonds, 10 of clubs, and 10 of spades. In order to win a round of Indian Rummy, a player must come up with a minimum of two sequences, and when Jokers are used in the game, one created set has to be absent of jokers; this is called a pure sequence.

Along with the two Joker cards in the deck, the dealer of the game will select a single card from the stock pile to serve as another set of Jokers for the round. The card that comes from the stock pile will determine the Joker or wild card in one of three ways. First, the wild will be a card of the same value regardless of its suit, so if a player draws a two of hearts, all twos are wild. Alternatively, the card will be of the same value, but of the opposite color, so if a player draws a two of clubs, the two of hearts and diamonds are wilds. Then, as another alternative, the card that is of the same suit as the card drawn but is the next highest in card value, would serve as the Joker. The latter type of select is identified as a “puploo.” The puploo card, when drawn, earns the holder of the card ten bonus points from every player. If two puploo cards are in the player’s hand, then it earns the player a 25 point bonus.

A card dealer is randomly chosen by a single card draw by each player; the player with the highest face value deals first. A game consisting of two players requires that each player get ten cards; three to four players get seven cards each, and five to six players get six cards. When all cards are dealt, the remainder of the deck is positioned face down on the table so they can be used as stock cards. The top card on the deck is positioned face up next to the deck to start the discard pile.

The goal of each player is to get rid of all the cards in his or her hand; this can be done in several ways. Players can put cards down in melds, or groups of three or more cards. There are two different types of melds; a meld can be comprised of three or four cards of identical value, like four Kings, or a player can put down a run of cards with consecutive values like 2,3,4,5, and 6 of the same suit.

The first player is the person sitting to the left-hand side of the card dealer. A player can draw a card from the stock pile (called “The Draw” or “Drawing”). If the card can be used create a meld, the player can lay the created meld down in the designated meld area. The player can then discard an undesired card from his or her hand. A meld can only be formed if the player has one during that specific turn. If the player cannot create a meld, the game moves on to the next player sitting to the left.

In some Classic Rummy versions, a player can add cards to a meld that already exists. When all the cards in the stock pile have been used, the discard pile is reshuffled and reused.
